WHAT IS COACHING?
The International Coach Federation (ICF) one of the leading organizations in establishing a code of ethics for professional coaching practices, defines coaching as:
“Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal & professional potential."
Professional Coaching is an ongoing professional relationship that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organizations. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performances, and enhance their quality of life.”
Thomas Leonard, often referred to as the Father of Life Coaching, described coaching as:
“Coaching is really an advanced form of relating. Thus, a coach develops scores of specialized listening, communication and relating skills that they use to help a client identify what they want, clarify who the are, and develop a strategy to reach their goals.”
And, from the Journal of Evidence Based Coaching and Mentoring
Coaching is also a learning process. Learning occurs through a process of development as follows:
- The coach fosters an accepting, honest, trusting, equal and purposeful relationship with clients.
- The coach questions and listens to them and holds them accountable to learning, while
- Clients reflect, take action, take responsibility and progress to self-coaching, gradually taking over the processes that are initially facilitated by the coach.
- And, through the process, clients discover, apply and integrate new knowledge.
HOW COACHING WORKS
Coaching is becoming known as the fastest method today to take you from you are right now to where you want to be.
The coach’s job is to help you tap into your creativity and resourcefulness through confidential non-judgmental dialogue.
Sometimes this involves surface strategies like goal setting or habit change. But what about those factors under the surface that consistently take us to an undesired series of outcomes?
Here is how it all works:
How Do Beliefs Effect Coaching?
Your beliefs drive your thoughts and your thoughts drive your emotions. Let’s break this down for a moment. Most people know they are capable of accomplishing whatever it is they want to accomplish in life.
In our logical world, we put the emphasis on the physical. However emotional limitations are by far the most powerful forces that keep you from getting where you want to be. They cloud our judgment and we feel heavy. They cloud our judgment and keep us from being the person we truly are.
How Do Emotions Effect Coaching?
Emotion can be defined as a psycho-physiological reaction to a thought. Think about that for a moment. Your emotions are directly related to a thought. Most people think that your emotions are triggered by what people say or do, context and circumstances that are beyond their control.
If your thoughts drive your emotions, what if you could simply observe your thoughts and decide which ones to believe.
What if you and your thoughts are separate? When you see yourself as your thoughts, you become a victim. When you observe your thoughts you begin to take control. This distinction between self and thoughts is one of the most powerful concepts to any type of personal development or personal transformation.
The Dynamic Impact of Emotions and Beliefs
Where do these thoughts come from? They come from your underlying limiting beliefs. Simply put, these limiting beliefs are your personal filters. A series of decisions that you made about yourself and your world that have been heavily influenced by your upbringing, schooling and culture.
The clues to discovering these beliefs are found by observing your thoughts. Once you and your coach bring these thoughts out in the open, you can keep the ones that help you and let go of the ones that don’t.
When an unhelpful negative belief is undone, it can no longer generate negative thoughts and therefore can no longer hold you back or cause you pain.
The triggers to your emotions are also uncovered by observing your thoughts. Sometimes you don’t even have to undo the underlying limiting beliefs, when you notice the absurdity of some of your thoughts, you can simply find a healthier substitute.
How Can Coaching Positively Impact All This?
Through the coaching process, your new way of thinking is reinforced and old ways of thinking begin to weaken and fade away. Once you have Awareness, there is no going back to old patterns of negative thinking.
You begin to see the world in a new exciting way, and you will laugh at how you used to react emotionally to certain situations that now simply have no negative meaning for you.
You are no longer carrying that heaviness with you wherever you go because the coaching conversation helps you to let go of the weight.
When you are lighter you are more in tune with your intuition and your creativity, and you have clarity in your life. The invisible barrier between you and what you want simply disappears.
This is the magic of the coaching conversation. What part of your life isn’t the way you want it to be?
